Big Fish at Lake St. Clair

April was kind to me at Lake St. Clair in Detroit.  My friend Kendall Ulsh put us on the some nice ones.  If you would like to catch em like this, get ahold of me, and I'll set you up with Kendall.  It's worth it.   Or go to his website, kdawg.net.

Scotty Bud's 2007 Bass Classic

This year the Scotty Bud Bass Classic will be held on Saturday July 28th at Gull Lake.  I will be partnering with CATT and the City of Plainwell and their Island Festival.  It will benefit Pretty Lake Vacation Camp For Kids, as usual.  The entry fee for each boat is only $50.  Click here for the entry form.  Entry forms also available at CCC Bait and Tackle in Gobles, D & R Sports in Kalamazoo, and Gander Mountain in Portage.

This is Steve Schussman from Kalamazoo.  He caught this 7 pound smallmouth and had his photo in Bassmaster Magazine recently.  In case you don't know, that is one giant smallie.  I mentioned it on the air and he happened to be listening at that exact time. What are the odds?

Deliverin' The Goods
August 18, 2006

We delivered the life vests that we bought for Pretty Lake Vacation Camp for Kids this week.  Thanks to Nate Leanin (pictured), Ben Smith and Derrick Wissner at the camp.  Last year we delivered a boat and motor with proceeds from my bass tournament.  Next year I'm thinking the camp might need some new fishing rods for the kids.  Gotta get 'em fishing at a young age.  Thanks to everyone who fished in the Scotty Bud Bass Classic this year.  You helped get the camp their new life vests.

Kentucky Lake BASS Tournament
June 20, 2006

Had a great time at Kentucky Lake for the BASS Elite Series Tournament.  Kevin VanDam finished third.  He had a pretty good tournament, but I know he's disappointed in third.  Here is my recap of the weekend:

Got to hang with the ESPN crew which included my friend Mark Zona. He is now the main personality for ESPN fishing.  No one else comes close to his energy, confidence, or personality.   Had dinner with Jerry McKinnis, the head of the production company who does the BASS stuff, his son Mike, and Tommy Sanders who hosts the BASSMASTERS with Zona. Sanders does some great impressions.  Jerry bought me dinner Saturday night.  For a while Saturday night, it looked like ESPN was going to need my help.  Saturday night they were a few cameramen short for Sunday's final day.  Bad weather had kept them from getting to the event.  I offered to grab a camera Sunday and go with a boat, but turns out they didn't need me.  Damn, my big shot and it fell through.

The tournament was cool, and it was close all the way to the end, when Morizo Shimizu won it.  The guy was in 49th after the first day.  He doesn't know any English, and it was funny to watch him smile and laugh at everybody who tried to talk with him.

Went fishing with a guy we met who lived on the lake. His name was Levin, and he was one of the biggest rednecks I've ever met.  He dropped the "n" word a hundred times, told some outlandish stories about his propane business, and entertained us for a couple hours.  I think he had smelled a little too much propane over the years.  I had a three pounder on, but he jumped off.

ESPN host Byron Velvick was there with his fiance Mary.  She fished as a co-angler.  I think she did better than he did. He finished almost last.  I think his 15 minutes are almost up.  It's gotta suck being on national tv every week, and telling the world that you didn't make the cut or finished last.

Our hotel was a piece of shit, but I'm not complaining, it was free.  Lost the cable Saturday night, couldn't watch the NHL game.  Did get to hang with Louie Stout and his wife Deb.  Louie writes for BASSMASTER magazine and some other publications too. He's cool.  Also yapped with KVD's wife Sherry whom I hadn't seen in a couple months.

Talked with Keith Alan, the guy who hosts the weigh-ins at the tournaments.  He used to be in radio, and he has been fired way more times than I have, so I don't feel so bad.  He does an ok job, but I think he could be a little more personable.  It's not an easy gig to be "on" for two hours in front of a big crowd, trust me.  I'm just saying, how about a smile or two once in a while and lighten it up.

If you think the life of a pro fisherman is easy, think again.  These guys have a long day during tournaments.  Up at 4, get ready for the day, on the water by 5, fishing at 6, fish for 8 hours, weigh in, do interviews, sign autographs, go to a meeting or two for the next day,  find dinner, put away your boat, get your stuff ready for the next day, maybe go to a sponsor party or dinner, then finally go to bed so you can get up at 4 again.  I admire them, that's a tough schedule.

CHATTERBAITS RULE

I recently received a few of the hottest baits in the world  from Rad Lures.  They make the Chatterbait.  It ruled at the Bassmaster Classic and they're going for $40 a piece on Ebay.  The company was nice enough to send me some to test up here in Michigan.  If you want to grab some, check their website. Good luck.

Kevin VanDam is the best bass fisherman in the world.  Unfortunately, I owe him poker money.

You can see my friend Mark Zona on Bass Saturdays on ESPN.
